Upright meaning
The Devil presides over two figures in chains they could lift off at any time, which is the card's entire joke and nobody in it is laughing. This is leverage: the margin loan, the weekly options, the position sized by adrenaline, the app opened forty times a day. Every chain here was clicked through voluntarily, terms and conditions accepted. The Devil does not force anything — he simply makes the exit feel impossible and the next trade feel necessary. The bondage is real. So is the clasp. It opens from the inside, and always has.
